Applicable Codes & Standards

A reference to the codes and standards that commonly govern solar PV and battery energy storage (BESS) EPC work. The governing edition and any state or local amendments are set by the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ), so always confirm the adopted year and local modifications for your specific project. Applicability varies by scope and location — treat this as a starting checklist, not a substitute for a project-specific code review.


Electrical Codes

  • National Electrical Code (NEC / NFPA 70) — The foundational US standard for electrical installation safety and premises wiring. Solar and storage design leans heavily on Article 690 (Solar PV Systems), 691 (Large-Scale PV Electric Supply Stations), 705 (Interconnected Electric Power Production Sources), 706 (Energy Storage Systems), 710 (Stand-Alone Systems), and 480 (Stationary Standby Batteries).
  • National Electrical Safety Code (NESC / IEEE C2) — Governs the safe installation, operation, and maintenance of electric supply and communication utility systems, covering overhead and underground lines and supply stations. The utility-side counterpart to the NEC, applicable at the point of interconnection and beyond.

Interconnection & Power System Design

  • IEEE 1547 — Standard for the interconnection and interoperability of distributed energy resources (DER) with the electric grid. Defines the voltage and frequency ride-through, power quality, and interconnection requirements that solar and BESS plants must meet. IEEE 1547.1 covers the associated conformance test procedures.
  • IEEE 3000 Series — The modernized successor to the classic IEEE "Color Books," a collection of recommended practices covering the design, analysis, grounding, protection, and maintenance of industrial and commercial power systems.

Grounding & Soil Characterization

  • IEEE 80 — IEEE Guide for Safety in AC Substation Grounding. The basis for ground grid design: computing step and touch potentials, ground potential rise, and conductor and grid sizing to keep personnel safe during a ground fault.
  • IEEE 81 — IEEE Guide for Measuring Earth Resistivity, Ground Impedance, and Earth Surface Potentials of a Grounding System. Covers the field test methods for soil resistivity surveys and for verifying as-built grounding performance.
  • IEEE 442 — IEEE Guide for Soil Thermal Resistivity Measurements. Establishes how to measure native soil thermal resistivity, a key input for underground cable ampacity and thermal derating.
  • IEEE 2778 — IEEE Guide for Solar Power Plant Grounding for Personnel Protection. Purpose-built for utility-scale (5 MW and greater) ground-mount PV plants, focusing on how their grounding practices differ from substation grounding under IEEE 80.

Arc Flash & Electrical Safety

  • NFPA 70E — Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace. Establishes safe work practices around electrical hazards — approach and arc-flash boundaries, PPE requirements, energized work permits, and lockout/tagout — and pairs directly with the IEEE 1584 incident-energy calculations.
  • IEEE 1584 — IEEE Guide for Performing Arc-Flash Hazard Calculations. The standard method for computing incident energy and arc-flash boundaries, which drives PPE selection and equipment labeling.

Fire & Lightning Protection

  • NFPA 855 — Standard for the Installation of Stationary Energy Storage Systems. The cornerstone BESS safety standard, covering siting and separation, unit size and spacing limits, fire detection and suppression, ventilation and explosion control, and the hazard mitigation analysis (HMA) that AHJs increasingly require.
  • NFPA 780 — Standard for the Installation of Lightning Protection Systems. Covers lightning protection system design and the associated risk assessment, relevant for inverter stations, substations, control enclosures, and BESS units.

Testing & Commissioning

  • ANSI/NETA ATS — Acceptance Testing Specifications for Electrical Power Equipment and Systems. Defines the field tests and inspections used to confirm that newly installed equipment is correct, undamaged, and ready to energize.
  • ANSI/NETA (Standards Family) — Beyond ATS, NETA maintains MTS (Maintenance Testing Specifications), ECS (Electrical Commissioning Specifications), and ETT (certification of electrical testing technicians) — the broader suite governing testing and commissioning quality.

Drafting & Documentation

  • NCS v6 — United States National CAD Standard, Version 6 (National Institute of Building Sciences). Standardizes construction drawing production — CAD layer naming, the Uniform Drawing System, symbols, and plotting guidelines — so drawing sets stay consistent across disciplines and firms. (Note: Version 7 has since been released; V6 remains in wide use among firms standardized on it.)
